Developers Clearford has researched, refined and patented the SBS™ system and developed it to meet the stringent requirements for North American settings, including design adaptations for weather and frost conditions. Strategic partnering with PCL as a national constructor for Clearford will provide the confidence of a well designed and managed construction process, with substantive quality control and effective system warrantees and performance guarantees. The SBS™ solution has numerous benefits for developers, including:
Unparalleled Design Flexibility & Scalability In historic gravity sewers, straight alignment in both horizontal and vertical planes are an essential part of the functionality of the sewer system, with maintenance holes required for every change in grading or horizontal directional change and at regular 100 metre intervals along the piping systems; these linear requirements are driven by the need to carry solids in the piping system. The SBS™ clarifier tank removes solids from the waste stream at each household, so the piping system only carries liquid. As such, the SBS™ main piping system can be installed with curvilinear alignment, as well as variable grading within the overall main and lateral systems. With the SBS™, a subdivision can be designed based on either community requirements (personal preferences or constraints), or conforming to the natural contours and landscape, rather than being mandated by linear grid patterns. As well, horizontal directional drilling used with the SBS™ installation can preserve sensitive areas, such as aquatards and historic trees. Treat What Needs to be Treated For each 1,000 people connected to a historic gravity sewer, 32,000,000 litres of groundwater enter the sewage collection system each year, and become contaminated, then taken to a treatment plant. This is simply not a responsible approach to providing sanitary sewer servicing. The sealed SBS™ system guarantees zero groundwater contamination and no unnecessary treatment of clean groundwater – an environmentally and economically rational approach. Process Solids More Efficiently All sewage treatment processes generate solids. Some do it better than others. The SBS™ system processes solids by separating them right at their source – and allows them to digest in clarifier tanks for 7-10 years. Retaining the solids in the tank allows for natural digestion to take place (a methodology to reduce sludge volume), which ensures that the overall volume going to the treatment plant will be reduced by as much as 50%. Sewage treatment plants connected to a historic gravity sewer process all of the solids on a daily basis, and can only degrade the solids based on the storage capacity of the plant’s digester, which if offered at all, is generally limited to 60 days residence time. This means that the biosolids are then returned to the environment in greater volumes and on a more frequent basis. Buyers Want to Go Green There is a growing worldwide recognition of the benefits of environmental responsibility and while there are many factors that contribute to the purchase of a home, (location, price, amenities, etc.), it is considered a premium to be part of a development with identified green features. The Clearford Small Bore Sewer™ system is a win-win-win for the home owner, the developer, as well as the environment. |
