A Break in the Pandemic: Clearford India Update Q3 2021

By Sanjay Deshpande, Executive Director & Head of Operations, Clearford India

India began to see a decline in COVID-19 cases towards the end of July and by mid August, most of India had reopened partially or fully. Lifting of restrictions expanded Clearford India business development networking opportunity, complementing virtual efforts with in-person conversations with prospective clients. With the monsoon and cyclone season on the horizon, the Clearford India team quickly got to work signing new contracts and executing existing projects where possible.

Projects Under Execution

Plot Pada Village, Maharashtra –The entire Clearford OneTM system is installed with the exception of the mixers and attenuators. During the installation, the Clearford India team worked with its NGO partner, Anarde Foundation, and solar equipment suppliers to design a unique treated water system powered by solar energy to carry the treated water from the sewage treatment plant (STP) location at the lowest point of the village to the agricultural fields above the village. The treated water system construction is scheduled to commence in November with the commissioning of the system scheduled for end 2021.

Clearford India plans to install more solar powered systems at our CSR funded rural village projects in the future.

Swachh Poondi Project Phase 2, Tamil Nadu – In mid-August, COVID-19 travel restrictions were lifted in the village of Arunthatiyar Colony, allowing the Clearford India team to complete the construction of the ClearDigest TM Smart Digesters and begin laying the pipe network. The STP location was also cleared of all brush and prepared for construction to commence. Phase 2 is scheduled to complete in December 2021.

Projects nearing Start of Execution

Alwa Village Phase 3B, Gujarat – Upon the project issuance to Clearford India, our team immediately began surveying the remaining part of the village to identify locations for the ClearDigest TM Smart Digesters. Although the pandemic made for a tight timeline, Phase 3B will have Digesters built in over 110 homes.

Work here was scheduled to start in October but has been delayed to mid-November due to Cyclone Gulab hit the region at the end of September, pooling copious amounts of rain and causing an earthen dam that rose above the village to breach flooding the village with lake waters.

A series of meetings were held in late August with our NGO partner, The Voice Foundation, at both the Bangarampettai ST Colony Village and the Venkatapuram SCA Colony. A topographical survey, village mapping and a Household survey were all performed at both these villages. Subsequent to this an initial Clearford OneTM network was designed by mid-Sept.  At the end of September, Clearford’s Site Engineer performed a site visit to confirm the proposed layout. With a few minor tweaks, the site design was finalized.

Project Pipeline

Clearford India continues to pursue projects that derive from the new strategy developed in Q1, targeting Corporate Water Sustainability as part of Corporate India’s SDG Goals.

During quarter 4, the Bill of Quantities of both of the sites in Tamil Nadu, will be sent to our local civil contractors with a targeted completion date of end Q1 2022. These projects are funded under the CSR mandates of two of India’s largest financial institutions: Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co. Ltd. and HDFC Bank.

Design work and discussions with clients are underway at Industrial unit sites in the States of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Odisha, Kerala and Jharkhand.
