Clearford Delivers Packaged Wastewater Treatment Plant to YOW1 Warehouse in Ottawa
As previously announced in September 2018, Ottawa-based Clearford Water Systems was awarded a design-build contract with Broccolini to supply a wastewater treatment plant for the new one-million-square-foot YOW1 Warehouse located in Ottawa’s east end. Clearford undertook the design and custom manufacturing of a packaged Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) plant with capacity to treat up to 225 m3/day of sewage.
Clearford was eager to accept the challenge of delivering a turnkey treatment system on a tight 8-month schedule. Dealing with record snowfall in mid-January, Clearford successfully installed six large underground concrete tanks at the site that will serve to control the flow through the treatment plant and accommodate aeration for biological treatment of the wastewater.
Tertiary-level treatment is provided by state-of-the-art hybrid membranes manufactured by Ontario-based Fibracrast, a technology developed down the road from Clearford’s Stoney Creek manufacturing facility in the city of Hamilton. These membranes filter out contaminants from the wastewater, leaving a very high-quality effluent that can be safely discharged to the natural environment. Final treatment to disinfect the water before release is achieved by ultraviolet disinfection units provided by Clearford’s Toronto-based subsidiary UV Pure.
“We are very pleased to deliver a solution that is 100 percent engineered and manufactured in Ontario to such a high profile project in our own backyard,” said Clearford CEO Kevin Loiselle. “We believe this kind of decentralized solution based on packaged treatment plants is the future of water treatment in Ontario and worldwide,” continued Mr. Loiselle. “It has been a pleasure working with Broccolini Construction, who have shown vision and leadership on this remarkable project,” he concluded.
Clearford’s packaged treatment solution was fabricated in its dedicated 30,000 square-foot manufacturing facility, offering a more controlled environment than traditional onsite construction. All of the electrical and mechanical equipment was configured in a single modified shipping container reducing the physical and environmental footprints of the packaged solution.
After completing its 550-km journey across Ontario, the MBR plant was delivered to the warehouse site by flat-bed truck in the early afternoon on March 13th, where a crane transferred the container within an hour to its assigned location. The Clearford team will commission the plant over the coming weeks to meet the project deadline, in time to treat wastewater for up to 1,000 workers when the YOW1 Warehouse begins operations in Summer 2019.
