Clearford India Update Q2 2023

By Sanjay Deshpande, Executive Director & Head of Operations, Clearford India

During the second quarter, Clearford India primarily focused on completing Client project handovers, engaging in discussions with new and existing clients to set expectations for the upcoming 2023-24 year, reviewing the progress of ongoing efforts in developed sectors and formulating strategies for incorporating new verticals.

Presented below is a summary of Clearford’s most recent project advancements in India.

Projects Completed

Alwa Village, Gujarat, Phase 3C

Within 5 months, Clearford India completed the final phase of the Alwa Village project for our client Larsen & Turbo Energy – Hydrocarbon. With the installation of nearly 4 kms of sewage collection network and the construction of a 70m3/day sewage treatment plant (STP), this Phase connected an additional 240 residential homes and two institutions.

Clearford completed the Alwa Village project within the proposed 5-year timeline by installing the Clearford One™ system, building 282 Digesters, and laying of 650m of uPVC pipe and 5.6kms of HDPE pipe. In total, this project serviced 364 homes, two institutions, and overall benefited a population of nearly 1,800.

One of the project highlights was the STP’s established capacity of 99 m3, annually recycling 36 million litres of treated wastewater for agricultural purposes. This project exemplifies a Circular Economy Green Nature Based Solution Project and stands as the single largest CSR rural development project awarded to Clearford India to date.

UltraTech Kharia Khangar Town, Rajasthan, Phase 1

Phase 1 of the UltraTech project aims to deliver 150 m3 of partially treated wastewater to the STP for further treatment and reuse in the putty and cement manufacturing process.

During this quarter, Clearford India has performed rigorous system testing and cross checked the work executed with the objective of handing over the project to our client, Aditya Birla Group, by September 2023. The primary aim of this project is to reduce the cement manufacturing unit’s dependency on freshwater, currently drawn from the rapidly depleting groundwater table.

Hindalco Taloja Unit Pilot, Mumbai

This project, while commissioned in April 2022 and handed over to the client in July 2023. The official warranty period for this project came to a successful close in Q2 2023. We are delighted to share that the Clearford One system has been functioning seamlessly, with the 30m3 STP equipped with ultraviolet disinfection, delivering clean water for the unit’s landscaping needs.

Initially designed as a small paid pilot, the project served as a demonstration of the effectiveness of Clearford’s solution and an opportunity to showcase the CAPEX and O&M cost advantages offered within the Aditya Birla Group. As a result, Clearford is currently executing three projects within the Group and discussing additional opportunities for collaboration.

Projects Underway

Hathiyana Village, Assam

Following a busy first quarter with the completion of data collection, design work, and assigned local contractor, Clearford was quick to begin the execution of this project at the start of Q2. With an accelerated timeframe of completing the project by end September 2023, Clearford is already discussing two other projects on the horizon in the State of Assam.

Hindalco Muri Unit, Jharkhand, Phase 1

Following the project award in Q4 of 2022, Clearford is gearing up to complete this project by August 2023. To conclude this project, Clearford is installing a sewer network in a designated area of the extensive South Colony Township and transporting the wastewater to their currently underutilized STP.

Further details about the projects completed and underway can be found in the blog post: Clearford India Update Q1 2023.

Future Projects

Clearford India remains proactive in exploring new opportunities to service resorts, manufacturers, and food and beverage clients.

Current Collaborations

We are actively engaged in future project discussions with three more Aditya Birla Group companies, three Mahindra Group affiliated resorts, and other smaller prospects. Additionally, Clearford is aiming to extend its presence in the northeastern states through its continued discussions with the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology.

Diversifying Clearford’s Reach

Throughout 2022, the Clearford India team identified two new verticals which are actively being developed.

The first vertical focuses on the greywater-only collection and treatment component of the Clearford One system, which we believe holds tremendous potential in urban and semi-urban areas. In such regions, toilets are typically connected to septic tanks and/or soak pits but the untreated greywater is allowed to flow through surface-exposed stormwater, ultimately impacting local ponds and rivers. By implementing the Clearford One system, the greywater will be efficiently managed, preventing the STPs uncontrolled discharge into the natural environment. Overall, this will help address environmental issues and promote sustainable water management practices in these areas.

The second vertical involves Government-funded projects with the aim to have our first project signed by 2024-25. Current discussions are in place with military bases and two Indian State Water and Wastewater authorities.

Global Project Exploration

Internationally, the India office is exploring project opportunities in three countries; Ethiopia, Nepal, and Bangladesh, with a particular emphasis on Impact Finance and Blended Finance Funding Models. Collaborating with local partners, Clearford India seeks to identify potential realistic and impactful projects in these regions.

These new verticals demonstrate Clearford India’s ability to adapt and innovate to meet the specific requirements of its partners. These developments reflect a promising future for Clearford India and demonstrate its unwavering commitment in providing innovative and sustainable sanitation solutions across India.
