Clearford India Update Q3 2023

By Sanjay Deshpande, Executive Director & Head of Operations, Clearford India

In the third quarter of 2023, India experienced its annual monsoon season, during which the Clearford India team primarily focused on engaging with new and existing clients. During breaks in the rainfall, the team took full advantage and was able to complete two ongoing projects that were nearing their conclusion.

Here’s a summary of Clearford’s recent project progress in India:

Projects Completed

Hathiyana Village, Assam

Despite encountering unusually heavy rainfall this quarter, Clearford managed to complete all civil work in Q3. The team’s perseverance set the stage for the final phases of the project to be completed in Q4, which includes training of the villagers and project handover.

During this quarter, Clearford India performed rigorous system testing and verified the work completed with the objective of handing over the project to our client, Aditya Birla Group, by the end of 2023. In the upcoming quarter, there will be a comprehensive data cross-check and the Client’s team will undergo operator training for the installed system. The project objective is to reduce the cement manufacturing unit’s reliance on freshwater, which is currently sourced from a rapidly depleting groundwater table and a canal.

At this project site, Clearford India designed a Clearford One™ SBS sewer system and supervised its installation in a designated pilot area within the expansive South Colony Township. The network was purposefully engineered to transport the wastewater to their currently underutilized Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). This project was successfully completed in September, and the India team is currently immersed in the handover process.

Further details about the projects completed and underway can be found in the blog post: Clearford India Update Q2 2023.

Future Projects

Diversifying Clearford’s Reach

As previously discussed in the last quarterly update, Clearford India is venturing into two new verticals: greywater-only collection and treatment component of the Clearford One system and government-funded projects.

Alongside these expansions, Clearford India is actively exploring collaborative projects jointly with our clients in eight different states across India. Simultaneously, the team is engaging with the Government of India and the Indian Armed Forces to understand their specific needs and identify how Clearford can provide viable solutions.

Global Project Exploration

Internationally, the India office is exploring project opportunities in Senegal and Mauritius, two additional countries added to the earlier identified projects in Ethiopia, Nepal, and Bangladesh. In these countries, given their specific financial constraints, there is a particular emphasis on considering Impact Finance and Blended Finance Funding Models.

Clearford India in the News

September 2023 proved to be an interesting month marked by an abrupt and unexpected decline in relations between the Indian and Canadian governments, which had a significant impact on Clearford India’s planned activities.

The most notable setback was the indefinite postponement of the trade mission to India led by Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng’s. The numerous local companies and government entities that had confirmed B2B engagements with the 100 Canadian companies, including Clearford, were now suddenly cancelled.

Fortunately, Clearford India managed to maintain direct contact with many of these companies. We are pleased to report that the Government of India and its affiliated entities continue to offer their support to Clearford India, allowing us to continue our engagement.

As we anticipate significant developments in the future, we invite you to stay informed about Clearford’s projects in both India and Canada by subscribing to our newsletter.
