Scope of Position

The Intermediate Engineer – Drinking (Potable) Water possesses high standards of work quality and organizational performance. As the successful candidate you keep current with advancements in water design and servicing and provincial/federal regulations in order to support investigation and troubleshooting, taking into consideration best practices and developments within the field, and corporate policies and practices.

As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for working closely with the Engineering and Operations staff as well as our client managers to provide support for drinking water treatment and distribution facilities and to identify opportunities for process improvement and developing project leads.

You have working knowledge and experience in local Ontario regulations, including the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOH) requirements for design and operation of drinking water systems.

You will monitor drinking water treatment facilities, assist with troubleshooting design and equipment related issues and will prepare regulatory documents and permits. You will also assist with estimating the level of effort for new project opportunities.  contribute to the development and writing of proposals, and complete conceptual and detailed design of small drinking water systems.

This is a hybrid position with regular office work required, with the option to work remotely up to 3 days per week. Must be able to commute to the Ottawa or Stoney Creek offices 2 days a week.

Major Responsibilities

(this is not an exhaustive list of duties to be performed)
  • Lead and support water treatment design activities, including equipment sizing and selection for decentralized water treatment plants, reservoirs, pumping stations and related infrastructure.
  • Assist with the design of potable water servicing infrastructure from feasibility level and regulatory consultations and approvals to the detailed design stage.
  • Assist with construction review and commissioning of water treatment systems.
  • Apply the requirements under O. Reg. 170/03, O. Reg. 319/08 and Procedure for Disinfection of Drinking Water in Ontario to design, monitor, optimize and troubleshoot small drinking water systems.
  • Prepare engineering design reports, Engineering Evaluation Reports (EERs), facility manuals, permitting and approvals applications, assessment reports, options analysis and technical memoranda.
  • Implement solutions by evaluating alternative options and assessing system impact.
  • Track and monitor project and operations sites and work with Operations staff to identify opportunities for new projects.
  • Assist with preparing engineering proposals based on the scope of work and estimated level of effort.
  • Improve operational results by recommending process design adjustment and optimization.
  • Work to maintain a safe and healthy work environment at all operational sites by following and enforcing standards and procedures.

Required Knowledge, Experience, & Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, with P.Eng. certification in Ontario.
  • 7-12 years’ experience, working knowledge of drinking water processes and facility design and operation, with experience in small communal/ decentralized system.
  • Experience in application and interpretation of Ontario regulations and acts, including O. Reg. 170/03: Drinking Water Systems, O. Reg. 319/08: Small Drinking Water Systems and Procedure for Disinfection of Drinking Water in Ontario, Safe Drinking Water Act and Ontario water design guidelines.
  • Experienced in preparing and sealing Engineering Evaluation Reports (EERs).
  • Able to liaise with MECP staff to discuss site specific drinking water requirements.
  • Able to read and interpret EERs, Public Health Directives, engineering plans and operations and maintenance manuals.
  • Knowledge in design and operation of small wastewater treatment systems is a strong asset.
  • Able to work effectively and efficiently with colleagues, contractors and clients.
  • Strong communicator, both oral and written.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Able to prioritize and take appropriate actions to address project issues within difficult time constraints.
  • Possession of valid driver’s license and a clean driver’s abstract. Ability to travel and work in Ontario.
  • Proficiency in the preparation of reports and use of MS Office applications.

What We Offer

  • An annual salary starting from $85,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience;

  • RRSP contribution of 3% matched by employer after three months of employment.

Hours of work and Travel Expectations

  • Flexible work hours, 40 hours weekly, typically Monday – Friday 9 am – 5 pm. May be expected to occasionally work outside of regular business hours to meet client needs.
  • Hybrid role – you will be expected to work in our Stoney Creek or Ottawa Office, with the opportunity to work from home up to 3 days a week.
  • Occasional travel to job sites across Ontario is required.
